Todd Dodge took over as University of North Texas’ 16th head football
coach in December 2006. Since his arrival, season ticket purchases have increased over 40% and contributions to the Mean Green Club rose by 24%.
The excitement is building as he prepares for his first football season
and he is attracting national attention as USA Today, Sports Illustrated
and ESPN conduct interviews and tour the UNT campus as it gets ready for
the fall action.
Todd Dodge is known as one of the nation’s most successful high school
football coaches based on his historic winning run at Carroll High
School in Southlake, Texas. While at Southlake Carroll, Todd's Dragons won
four state championships and held a staggering 79-1 record, including a
48-game winning streak!
Coach Dodge’s abilities have made his name synonymous with high school
football at the national level. In addition to winning four of the last
five Class 5A state titles, Southlake Carroll was recognized as national
champions by USA Today in 2004 and 2006 and by PrepNation.com in 2005.
Todd had a 98-11 record overall at Carroll after taking over in 2000;
the only loss since the beginning of the 2002 season was by a single
point in the 2003 state title game. In 2005, the Dragons set the Texas
5A state record for most points in a single season by racking up 764
points.
Named National Coach of the Year by Schutt Sports in 2004 and by USA
Today in 2005, in 2006 PrepNation.com named Todd the Southwest Region
coach of the year. He shaped the last five Texas 5A Players of the Year,
with four that went on to play NCAA Div. I football – Chase Wasson at
Texas State University, Chase Daniel at the University of Missouri (2003
and 2004), and Greg McElroy at the University of Alabama. The fifth of
those players, Coach Dodge’s son Riley, won the award in 2006 as a
junior and joins his father this year at the University of North Texas.
A former starting quarterback for the University of Texas, Dodge threw
for 2,791 yards and 18 touchdowns during his time in Austin. He still
ranks ninth in both categories on the Longhorn’s all-time leaders list.
His 96-yard touchdown pass against Rice in 1985 is tied for the
second-longest play in UT’s history.

Here are just a few of the hundreds of lessons Todd
shares on this 3 hour in-depth interview:
In life and sports, do not play it safe. Always play to win!
Regardless of criticism or praise, always maintain your confidence and
belief.
The support of family and friends is crucial during times of adversity.
Your performance will propel those around you towards success or
failure.
As a competitor, always welcome responsibility and accountability.
Whether coaching a team, running a business, or in your own family,
always carry strong tradition from the past into the future.
When adversity comes, and it surely will, choose not to panic. Instead,
choose to face it head on with confidence.
Insurmountable odds also have the potential to be the defining moments
of your future success.
Big challenges help raise the bar and push you to great heights of
achievement.
Every player on every play matters. Sometimes victory is a few inches or
a few seconds away.
Success creates more opportunities for your self and those around you.
You have to pay your dues and prove yourself before being promoted.
Don't ever think you have arrived. Don't be intimidated by anyone, but
always give respect to your opponent.
The opportunity to impact lives exists not only in how we handle great
times but also times of adversity.
Sometimes to reach your goal, you will have to experience pain in the
short term.
The more success you have, the stronger your commitment needs to be to
improve.
Make the most of every opportunity to train, teach and improve your
players and team.
In pressure situations, champions rise to the occasion.
Physical conditioning in the spring always becomes a determining factor
at some point during the fall season.
Never look at defeat as permanent, but rather as a stepping stone to
future success.
Practice under pressure situations and you will perform well when it
truly counts.
The job of a leader, the job of the head coach is to take care of not
just the top 50 players on your team (talent wise), but also number
fifty one to number seventy and make sure that those kids know how
important their role is too.
Part of being a good leader is helping your team grow in their personal
lives and become better all around people.
Trust and honesty is essential. I can't help you if I can't trust you.
You can't start a plan, a team, an organization or a business without
stating what you want to accomplish.
Whether you are a:
- Head football coach
- Coach at any level
- Teacher or educator
- Business leader
- Avid football fan
- Student wanting to excel
the philosophies, life-lessons,
principles and strategies Todd Dodge shares will have an immediate
impact on your goals and will help shape your future success!
